Summer holidays: How VidiVet can give you peace of mind when you’re away with your pet

Summer holidays are an exciting time for the family, and for many of us, that includes our pets. Whether your pet is staying in the care of someone else, or you’re all heading away for a staycation, visiting family, taking your dog on a camping trip, or simply spending more time outdoors together, the summer months can bring a few unexpected questions and concerns about your pet’s health. That’s why, as a client of Newton Clarke Veterinary Surgeons, you have complimentary access to VidiVet.

VidiVet gives you access to a UK-based vet through an app, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. So, if you’re away from home or have a question about your pet when our practice is closed, you can get reliable veterinary advice without having to rely on a search engine or social media.

What is VidiVet?

VidiVet is a veterinary advice app that gives you access to a UK-based vet whenever you need advice.

You can ask your question through the app and receive a personalised video response from a vet. Your previous questions and responses are also stored within the app, so you have a record of the advice you’ve received.

This can be particularly reassuring during the summer holidays, when your usual routine may be different, and you might be further away from the Newton Clarke team than usual.

How could VidiVet help during the summer holidays?

Summer can mean new experiences and environments for our pets. They might be travelling in the car, exploring somewhere unfamiliar, spending more time outdoors or eating something they shouldn’t!

VidiVet can be useful for those moments when you’re thinking:

“Is this something I need to worry about?”

For example, you might want advice about:

  • Your pet being unwell while you’re away
  • Your dog eating something they shouldn’t have
  • A minor injury or unusual symptom
  • Flea, tick or worming advice
  • Your pet becoming unsettled in a new environment
  • Travel-related concerns
  • Feeding and dietary questions
  • Skin problems, itching or bites
  • Advice following a visit to the vet
  • Puppy or kitten questions
  • Post-operative care
  • Behavioural concerns

It’s also useful if something changes while you’re away and you’re unsure whether your pet needs to be seen by a vet straight away.

80% of our clients who have used VidiVet whilst we’re closed have had their query resolved without needing to visit an out-of-hours service, which can be a costly and time-consuming visit.

Going away with your pet? VidiVet can travel with you

One of the biggest benefits of VidiVet is that the app is available wherever you have a suitable internet or data connection.

The VidiVet team are available 24/7, meaning you don’t have to wait until you get home if something is worrying you. Equally, if you are away from home and are unsure how urgently your pet may need to be seen by a local vet, the VidiVet team will be here to support, reassure and guide you.

What should I do if my pet becomes unwell while I’m away?

VidiVet is designed to act as a triage and advice service. It can help you understand whether your pet needs to be seen by a vet, how urgently they need to be seen and what you can do in the meantime.

It can be especially helpful if you’re somewhere unfamiliar and don’t know whether a problem warrants an emergency veterinary visit.

However, VidiVet does not replace an in-person veterinary consultation.

If your pet needs an examination, treatment or prescription medication, this will need to be provided by a vet in person.

And if your pet is experiencing an obvious or life-threatening emergency, you should seek emergency veterinary care immediately from a qualified vet local to you, rather than waiting for an app response.

How does VidiVet work with Newton Clarke?

VidiVet is there to support you when the Newton Clarke team is unavailable.

The VidiVet vets can help you decide what to do next, but any in-person consultations, treatment or prescriptions will still be provided by us or our out-of-hours emergency service, MediVet Dorchester.

This means you have a reliable source of veterinary advice available outside our usual opening hours, while still having the reassurance of your own veterinary team when you need us.

What information should I give the VidiVet vet?

The more information you can provide, the more useful the advice is likely to be.

When asking your question, try to include:

  • When did you first notice the problem?
  • Is it getting better or worse?
  • What symptoms have you noticed?
  • Is your pet eating and drinking normally?
  • Are they behaving as they normally would?
  • Have they been somewhere different recently?
  • Could they have eaten something unusual?
  • Has anything happened that might have triggered the problem?
  • Has your pet experienced something similar before?

If you can, take a short video or photograph of the problem and include it with your question. This can give the vet useful additional information.

A useful travel companion for pet owners

We all hope that our summer holiday goes exactly to plan, but having access to reliable veterinary advice can provide extra reassurance if something unexpected happens.

Rather than spending hours searching online and wondering whether the information you’ve found applies to your pet, VidiVet allows you to ask a qualified vet directly.

It can help you understand:

  1. Whether your pet needs to see a vet
  2. How urgently they need to be seen
  3. Whether there is anything you can safely do at home
  4. What to expect if you do need to visit a vet

That can be particularly valuable when you’re away from your usual veterinary practice.

Does VidiVet cost me anything?

No.

As a client of Newton Clarke Veterinary Surgeons, your access to VidiVet is provided as one of the benefits of being registered with us.

How do I get started?

If you haven’t already activated your VidiVet access, you can get started through the VidiVet page here.

From there you can:

  • Sign up for your complimentary access
  • Download the VidiVet app
  • Start asking your questions

The app is available on compatible smartphones, tablets and some Apple computers. You’ll need a suitable internet or data connection, as well as a microphone and camera where required.

One final reminder before you head off on holiday

We hope you and your pets have a wonderful summer, but it’s always worth being prepared for the unexpected.

Before you travel, make sure you have your pet’s usual medication, relevant preventative treatments and important veterinary information to hand. It’s also a good idea to know where your nearest veterinary practice will be if you’re travelling away from home.

And remember, if you have a concern about your pet while Newton Clarke is closed, VidiVet is there to help you decide what to do next.

For an obvious life-threatening emergency, however, please seek immediate veterinary attention. Our chosen out-of-hours emergency service is MediVet Dorchester.

We hope you never need VidiVet this summer, but it’s reassuring to know you have a trusted team available when we are closed, if you do.
